Ladies! Let’s Talk Hot Flashes…

Ladies! Let’s Talk Hot Flashes…

They come out of nowhere. You may think to yourself, “Am I old enough for this?”

The fact is that your 40’s is the decade when perimenopause begins for most women though it can begin as early as your late 30’s. The average age range for hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, and unwanted weight gain is 46 to 53. So, if you are experiencing signs of perimenopause and are in this age range, please know that you are far from alone.

What is a Hot Flash Like?

Well? Let’s just say that they are correctly named. It’s a heat that comes from within out of seemingly nowhere. It can be hot out, cool, or snowing, your hormones do not care. POOF! In an instant, you go from a normal body temperature to being set on melt. During a hot flash, you might have a sudden feeling of warmth spreading through your chest, neck, and face. A flushed appearance with red, blotchy skin or you may have no redness at all and simply feel like a human inferno.

The nice thing is that they vanish as fast as appear. One moment you feel like you may end up a pile of cinders and the next, you are fine again.

If you aren’t expecting them or are used to getting hot flashes, you may mistake it for coming down with a fever or getting sick.

Exceptions

While the guideline age for perimenopause is 40, women can undergo premature menopause due to surgery, chemotherapy, or treatment for endometriosis.

Treatment for Hot Flashes

Hot flashes should end when you hit menopause. Menopause is defined as going 12 months straight with no period. At that point, you are no longer producing eggs or able to have children. Hormones at this time are much lower than earlier in life and should be starting to self-regulate and allow you to cool down naturally.

If you are reading this and experiencing hot flashes you may have just read that statement and thought to yourself “Twelve Months! That is a long time!” We agree with you! No one should suffer for a year. At Vitality Health of South Florida, we would love to do a consultation with you, do blood work, and see where your hormone levels are at. From there we can make recommendations and prescribe bioidentical hormone replacement that eases symptoms and makes the transition far smoother.
