Having Low Testosterone (Low T) Isn’t Just for Older Men!

Having Low Testosterone (Low T) Isn’t Just for Older Men!

There is a lot of conversation that surrounds this topic and we wanted to share our perspective and what we see day to day with hundreds of male patients. Depending on the source of information, physician, or medical group, you may see a variety of information.

While having low testosterone (Low T) is most commonly associated with older men, low testosterone can equally affect men of various ages, including younger men in their 20s. Yes, that’s correct even men in their 20’s…

Over the course of our time in the medical field, we have talked to and consulted with an increasing number of younger men who seemingly exhibit the same symptoms of low testosterone as their elder male counterparts. Some of these symptoms can include lower energy levels, low libido, lack of motivation, poor mood, and reduced quality of life in general. It is important to note that many of these same symptoms could potentially be confused with depression and possibly misdiagnosed. A misdiagnosis can lead to a whole rabbit hole of problems such as taking incorrect and unneeded medications which can have side effects and cause the patient to wrongly believe there is something emotionally wrong when the cause is actually physical.

Additionally, when looking at diagnostic lab testing and measuring total serum testosterone levels many of these younger men have in fact measured in an area of range that would be classified as having low testosterone or clinically known as hypogonadism.

Total testosterone level is measured using a standardized scale that ranges from 264 to 1200 ng/dL. For most men, low testosterone is considered to be measured from 200 to 400 ng/dL, while high testosterone is marked at over 1,000 ng/dL. Understanding, if your testosterone level is in the low, normal, or high range, can be very confusing and requires consulting with a qualified physician.

Furthermore, having low or lower testosterone does not mean that in all cases testosterone therapy should be started as there are many factors to consider. We do, however, believe that this is important data to have and that it, along with symptoms, should be monitored over time.

What causes low testosterone?

There are several potential causes of low testosterone in men, regardless of age:

Age: While it’s true that testosterone levels tend to decline as men age, some younger men may also experience lower levels due to various factors.

Medical Conditions: Certain medical conditions, such as hypogonadism (a condition where the body doesn’t produce enough testosterone), obesity, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, and certain genetic disorders can lead to low testosterone.

Medications: Some medications, including certain painkillers, steroids alcohol, and opioid medications, can lower testosterone levels.

Lifestyle Factors: Poor diet, lack of exercise, excessive alcohol consumption, and high-stress levels can contribute to low testosterone levels.

Testicular Injury or Disease: Injuries to the testicles or certain diseases affecting the testicles can result in decreased testosterone production.

Chemotherapy or Radiation: Cancer treatments like chemotherapy and radiation can impact testosterone production.

Endocrine Disorders: Disorders affecting the endocrine system, such as pituitary gland issues, can disrupt the hormonal balance and lead to low testosterone.

Sleep Disorders: Sleep apnea and other sleep disorders have been linked to lower testosterone levels.

The result of a lack of testosterone in the body

It’s important to note that low testosterone levels can lead to a range of symptoms, including reduced libido, fatigue, decreased muscle mass, mood changes, and even erectile dysfunction.
